Not used to easing into the New Year, Twitter was lit up with New Year wishes. The highest Twitter activity was experienced in Japan and Korea.
But if Twitter was lit up, China’s micro-blogging platform, Weibo, was blazing with 729,571 messages per minute-a new all-time record.
Back to Twitter. The 33,388 tweets per second trend smashed the previous record set when Beyoncé announced her pregnancy. Twitter’s success in East Asia has led the company to open its first office in Korea, while Japan became the first country to have Twitters promoted products, even getting TV rating services riding on tweets before the US market.
Into 2013, Twitter will be looking to fire up its promote feature where PR professionals can promote trends to users who see time-, context and event sensitive topics.
